Traffic congestion, the atomization of community, auto-related fatalities on an epidemic scale, road rage, local air pollution and global environmental depletion and destruction, economic inflation, the distortion of the industrial landscape, cultural rootlessness and alienation: all of these effects stem from the preeminent position accorded the automobile as a consequence of the maneuvers of corporate interests claiming to understand and express the popular will. Major cities have been transformed into parking lots. And America's "love affair" with the car has been a strictly unrequited one. Far from getting where we want to go more safely and quickly, we are ensnared in the dangerous, frustrating morass that is urban traffic.
